Simon & Schuster and Libraries Reach eBook Agreement

Simon & Schuster announced that it is expanding access to its catalog of ebooks to libraries nationwide. Now public libraries can acquire ebook editions of Simon & Schuster titles that had previously only been available for purchase through amazon.com or barnesandnoble.com.

The Waterloo Public Library will begin purchasing Simon & Schuster titles immediately through OverDrive. The process for checking out Simon & Schuster titles will be no different, however, patrons will notice an additional option on the screen. Simon & Schuster’s ebook titles will include a “Buy It Now” button which gives patrons the option to purchase a copy of Simon & Schuster ebooks through a library’s online portal, with a portion of the proceeds from each sale going to the library. This option may be of interest to patrons looking to support the Waterloo Public Library financially or for patrons who might not want to wait until a popular new title is available. The “Buy it Now” button is only an option; patrons will still be able to download their selected titles for free with eLending through Overdrive.

Overdrive Quick Tips

Would you like to suggest an eBook or eAudiobook for our collection?

There is something you should know. A library, unlike a regular person, cannot purchase an eBook or eAudiobook from Amazon or Barnes & Noble and then lend it out to patrons. Digital content is treated differently by the publishers and companies who manage content licensing. We want to offer as many eBooks and eAudiobooks as we can to you, however, some publishers' policies are preventing us from bringing you some of the works from your favorite authors. The following companies refuse to sell or license eBooks to libraries for eBook lending:

  • Brilliance Audio
  • Simon & Schuster

You may still call us to request an eBook or eAudiobook. Please be aware that we may not be able to get the eBook or eAudiobook you want because of certain publishers' restrictions. Thank you for your understanding.
